Boyd, Van Voorhis commit to the USNTDP Under 17 Team for 2009-2010

Hopkins Royals freshman forward Travis Boyd and Edina Hornets sophomore defenseman Matt VanVoorhis have committed to playing for the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) Under 17 team in 2009-2010.

Boyd led the Royals this past season with 51 points, 26 goals and 25 assists, in 26 games.

VanVoorhis played in 27 games for the Hornets in 2008-2009 where he scored two goals, one in the state tournament, and recorded nine assists.

NHL Central Scouting's Final Rankings | Minnesota High School Players

NHL Central Scouting released their final rankings for 2009. There are a total of 210 players in those rankings. There were 13 Minnesota high school players selected (not counting Shattuck-St. Mary's).

Here are the Minnesota high school players that found themselves on that list:

Round 1

22. Zach Budish (RW) - Edina Hornets | Committed to the University of Minnesota

Budish did not play a game during the 2008-2009 regular season due to a knee injury (torn ACL) received during football season in the fall. He still received the highest accolades from NHL Central Scouting for being the best Minnesota high school player available.

24. Nick Leddy (D) - Eden Prairie Eagles | Committed to the University of Minnesota

2009 Minnesota Mr. Hockey Nick Leddy led the Eden Prairie Eagles to their first ever Minnesota high school hockey state championship in March. Leddy finished the season with 12 goals, 33 assists, and a +40 plus/minus in 31 games played.

Round 2

35. Ben Hanowski (RW/LW) - Little Falls Flyers | Committed to St. Cloud State Univ.

Hanowski finished his senior season in style by breaking the all-time career scoring record and the all-time goal-scoring record in 2008-2009. Hanowski surpassed the career record previously held by Johnny Pohl (Red Wing). Pohl had 378 career points. Hanowski finished with 405 career points. Hanowski broke Dave Spehar's (Duluth East) career goal-scoring record of 171 goals on February 5th, 2009 against the very same St. Cloud Apollo team. He finished with 196 career goals. Hanowski help lead the Flyers to a third place finish in the Minnesota State Class A Tournament.

53. Danny Mattson (C/LW) - Academy of Holy Angels Stars | Committed to UND

Mattson finished the year for the Stars with 25 total goals and 52 assists.

Round 3

82. Nick Oliver (C/LW) - Roseau Rams | Committed to St. Cloud State University

Oliver had to overcome a collarbone injury at the beginning of the 2008-2009 season, missing several games, but he was able to finish the season physically healthy. He played in eight regular season games and the team's three playoff games. He finished with five goals and 11 assists in the 11 games he played.

Round 4

114. Tyler Lapic (C/LW) - New Prague Trojans | Committed to University of Wisconsin

Lapic finished with 25 goals and 45 assists in 27 games played in 2008-2009.

118. Anders Lee (C) - Edina Hornets | Committed to the University of Notre Dame

Lee, the high school football quarterback & hockey phenom, compiled 20 goals and 46 assists in 25 games played during the regular season. In the Section 2AA playoffs, in three games, he compiled four goals and five assists in leading the Hornets to the Class AA state tournament. At state, he scored one goal and assisted on eight others in three games in helping the Hornets to a fifth place finish.

Round 5

125. Berkley Scott (C/LW) - Anoka Tornadoes | Not committed

Scott finished his high school career scoring 17 goals and 15 assists in 28 games for a Anoka team that was unusually down in 2008-2009. After the season ended for Anoka in a Section 7AA quarterfinal loss in late February, Scott went straight to junior hockey and the Tri-City Storm in the United State Hockey League. He played 12 games for the Storm scoring no goals, two assists with a -4 plus/minus.

138. Dan DeLisle (C/LW) - Totino-Grace Eagles | Committed to Minnesota-Duluth

DeLisle, the 6'4" 222 lbs UMD recruit, finished with 32 goals and 24 assists in 27 games for Totino-Grace in 2008-2009.

144. Max Tardy (C) - Duluth East Greyhounds | Committed to Minnesota-Duluth

Tardy finished the 2008-2009 season with 35 goals and 25 assists in 30 games and led the Duluth East Greyhounds to Class AA state tournament berth.

Round 6

160. Charlie Taft (RW) - Edina Hornets | Not committed

Taft is the highest ranked and ONLY underclassmen on the list. The Hornets junior compiled 17 goals and eight assists in 29 games this past high school season.

163. Nate Schmidt (D) - St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders | Committed to U of Minnesota

Schmidt led the Crusaders to a fourth place finish at the Minnesota Class A State Tournament. In my opinion, he had of the greatest moves of the tournament against Mahtomedi. He sped through center ice with the puck, into the Zephyrs zone, split two defenders and, while falling down, zipped the puck past the goaltender. The senior defenseman finished the season with 25 goals and 29 assists in 31 games.

Round 7

181. Marshall Everson (LW) - Edina Hornets | Committed to Harvard University

Everson, the fourth Edina Hornet on the list, was also a major factor in the Hornets successful season. He finished with an overall total of 49 goals and 33 assists in 2008-2009. He scored seven goals in the state tournament and seven more in the Section 2AA playoffs.

High School Hockey to Dirt Track Racing

Three senior Minnesota high school hockey players turned in their skates once the season was over and exchanged them for wheels.

Blaine senior defensemen and twins, Clayton (#14W) & Jay Wagamon, race their WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds primarily at their home track, Princeton Speedway, in Princeton, MN. Princeton Speedway's season opener is Friday, April 24th. Last Saturday, Clayton started the season early and headed down to Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, MN. Out of 36 Midwest Modifieds, Clayton finished 14th in the A-Main. He started 20th.

The Blaine Bengals finished third in the Minnesota Class AA State Tournament defeating Cretin-Derham Hall of St. Paul, MN, 3-1. The team finished with a 26-4-1 record. Clayton scored two goals in the tournament. For the season, Clayton finished with 5 goals, 8 assists for 13 points in 31 games played. Twin brother Jay finished with 1 goal, 3 assists for 4 points in 27 games played.

Rochester Mayo senior goaltender, Jordan Yaggy, did well at stopping a speeding puck from getting by him into the net during the winter. This summer, Yaggy will showcase his own version of speed behind the wheel of his #77 WISSOTA Late Model. Late Models are arguably the premier class in dirt track racing. He too started the season early at Deer Creek Speedway last Saturday. He started 22nd out of 24 cars that night and finished 16th.

Yaggy raced Slingshots in 2008 at Deer Creek Speedway. It is no small jump going from racing Slingshots with those ranging in ages from 6 years old on up (including older adults) to the big guns in the WISSOTA Late Models.

Yaggy's hockey team, the Rochester Mayo Spartans, finished as runners-up in the Class AA, Section 1 tournament. They lost to Rochester Century, 7-3, in the championship game. On the year, Yaggy finished with 17 wins, 9 losses, a 3.06 goals against average, a .886 save percentage, and he had three shutouts.

If you know of any other varsity high school hockey players that are now racing on dirt this spring/summer, please email me. You can find out more on the Minnesota dirt track racing scene at Dirt Warriors.

If I missed someone, please let me know. It is very possible that I did.

Note: I normally do not add Shattuck-St. Mary's info on this site. Shattuck-St. Mary's is a prep school in Faribault, MN and is not part of the Minnesota State High School League. This site is normally reserved for those players that played, at least one year, of Minnesota State High School League sanctioned high school hockey. I am making an exception for players in the National Hockey League.

Cloquet's Jamie Langenbrunner scores the game-winning goal for New Jersey against Buffalo

Former Cloquet/Esko/Carlton Lumberjack Jamie Langenbrunner scored what ended up becoming the game-winning goal for the New Jersey Devils in their 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo. Langenbrunner's goal gave the Devils a 3-0 lead in the second period. The Sabres rally fell short in third period. Langenbrunner earned the number one star for his efforts.

Langenbrunner scored two goals and had an assist the day before in the Devil's 5-4 overtime win against Tampa Bay.

The Devils are 19-4 when Langenbrunner scores at least one goal.

Here is Langenbrunner's goal from Saturday against Buffalo:

Breck School's Blake Wheeler clinches the East for the Boston Bruins

Former Breck School and University of Minnesota forward Blake Wheeler scored the only goal in the Boston Bruins 1-0 win over the New York Rangers on Saturday in the National Hockey League. The win clinched the Eastern Conference title for the B's.

Here is Blake Wheeler's goal:
