Red Wing bounces back from home woes

With the home crowd antsy for a victory, the Wingers answered the call with a 5-2 win Tuesday over South St. Paul at Prairie Island Arena.

Coming in with a 1-3-1 record over its last five games at home, Red Wing exploded with four goals by four different players in the second period.

Mark Giorgi opened the flurry when his shot slipped past Packers goalie Dan Rothe at the 7:09 mark. The Packers answered back just 28 seconds later when Cody Schwantes scored, but the tie was short-lived as Red Wing senior Luke Halvorson scored at the 8:21 mark to put the Wingers up for good.

Dan Roschen added a power-play tally at the 14:22 mark to put Red Wing up 3-1 and Blake Schammel scored just 20 seconds later to cap the electic period. George Noesen, Colin Wanshura, Ryan Kesti, Schammel and Roschen each recorded one assist each in the second.

South St. Paul cut the lead to 4-2 when Zach Palmquist scored at the 15:41 mark of the third, but Schammel netted an empty-net goal with Danny Bergeson picking up an assist with 20 seconds to play.

Nathaniel Foot pushed aside 28 shots to collect the win, while Rothe stopped only 14 of 18 shots.

The Wingers, who improve to 9-5-2, return to Missota Conference action Thursday at home against New Prague. Red Wing senior Josie Alleva will be honored before the game with the announcement of the Josie Alleva Determination Award, or JADA award. Alleva will participate in a ceremonial puck drop before the matchup.
