West hockey team beat Albert Lea in OT
by Shane Frederick
Corey Leivermann had impeccable timing Thursday night.
The Mankato West boys hockey senior forward scored goals in the first minute of the first period, the closing moments of the second and, finally, with 2 minutes, 35 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Scarlets to a 3-2 win over Albert Lea before a packed house at All Seasons Arena.
“Big-game players come up big in big games, and I think (Leivermann) did that tonight,” West coach Ken Essay said. “Obviously, he’s been doing that all year, but in an environment like this, in a situation when it matters, it was huge.”
The win put West in the driver’s seat for the Big Nine Conference championship. More importantly, it kept the Scarlets among the top seeds in Section 1A with just three games remaining in the regular season.
Rochester Lourdes, Albert Lea and Red Wing are also in the mix. West (19-2-0, 10-1-0 in Big Nine) lost to Lourdes 4-3 a week ago and lost 3-2 to Albert Lea in their first meeting on Jan. 8.
