Junior forward Joey Benik of St. Francis is on his way to breaking the record for most goals in a season in Minnesota high school hockey. Currently, Benik has 55 goals in 21 games. The current record is held by Jared Festler of Little Falls who had 62 goals in 25 games in 2007. Benik needs to average 1.75 goals per game to tie the record in 25 games. The Saints have a total of 26 games on their regular season schedule. So far, Benik has been averaging 2.62 goals per game so the record is well in his grasp.
Of those last five games, the Saints face their toughest opponent of the season in Benilde-St. Margaret's. They face the Red Knights next Tuesday. They will also face Totino-Grace in game number 26 on the last day of the regular on February 19th. Totino-Grace held Benik to zero points the first time they played each other on January 24th.
Benik recently verbally committed to St. Cloud State University.
