Bauer NIT quarterfinal game notes

Minnesota Red will face Minnesota White, and defending champion Shattuck-St. Mary's will face Michigan in Saturday's semifinals of the Bauer National Invitational Tournament at New Hope Arena.

Minnesota White beat Culver Academy 7-1, while Minnesota Red topped Wisconsin 5-0. In the lower bracket, Shattuck topped the Dallas Jr. Stars 8-1, while Michigan defeated Manitoba 7-3.

Minnesota Red and White will face off at 1:00 p.m., while Shattuck and Michigan will meet at 3:30. The tournament championship game is Sunday at 1:30.

Minnesota White 7, Culver Academy 1

Archie Skalbeck of Hopkins scored three goals as Minnesota White defeated Culver Academy. Skalbeck's first goal broke a 1-1 tie in the first period and gave Minnesota White the lead for good. Max Gardiner of Minnetonka – who had a goal and three points – had scored earlier to tie the game after Culver's Kyle Trolley opened the scoring at the 5:00 mark.

Gardiner set up Skalbeck's second goal late in the second period, and Skalbeck completed his hat trick just 2:54 into the final period. Cal Dalcowski had a goal and an assists for Minnesota White, and goalie Alex Fons stopped 27 of 28 shots.

Shattuck-St. Mary's 8, Dallas Jr. Stars 1

Defending NIT champion Shattuck-St. Mary's rolled to an 8-1 victory over the Dallas Jr. Stars in their quarterfinal win. Eight different players scored for Shattuck, who led 2-0 after one period, and 7-0 after the second period.

J.P. Lafontaine scored Shattuck's first goal, and assisted on two others. Justin Lutsch had a goal and an assist, and Anthony Greco had a pair of assists. Shattuck out-shot the Jr. Stars 32-28.

Minnesota Red 5, Wisconsin 0

Brock Nelson and Zach Schroeder each scored two goals in a 5-0 Minnesota Red victory over Wisconsin.

Nelson, who plays for Warroad high school and is headed for the University of North Dakota, scored just 58 seconds into the game, then added a second-period goal, assisted by Christian Isackson, who had scored the second goal of the game. Schroeder's two goals came just 2:37 apart in a second-period barrage that saw Red outshoot Wisconsin 22-0, en route to a 53-13 shot advantage.

Michigan Development Hockey League 7, Manitoba Prep 3

Patrick Brown's hat trick led the all-star team from the Michigan Development Hockey League to a 7-3 win over an all-star team from Manitoba prep schools.

Brown had a pair of first-period goals as Michigan raced to a 5-0 lead, then completed his hat trick in the third period after Manitoba had cut the lead to 6-2. Kenny Babinski had a goal and assist for Michigan, while Evan Moore and Zakerie Thompson each had two assists.

TOURNAMENT NOTES: More than 50 scouts and college coaches attended Friday's games, including NHL Central Scouting director E. J. McGuire, who flew in from Toronto for the weekend. Also with him are Peter Sullivan and Christian Bordeleau from Central Scouting. There are 17 players in the tournament who had committed to Division I college programs.
