2009-2010 Boys Hockey Section Seedings

In less than 30 days, two new state champions will be crowned!

March 13th is championship day!

If you like the website and if you can, please donate. Help me get out of South Dakota! :)

Here are the Sections seedings:

Section 1AA

1. Lakeville South
2. Rochester Century
3. Lakeville North
4. Winona
5. Owatonna
6. Farmington
7. Rochester John Marshall
8. Rochester Mayo
9. Dodge County

Note: Agree 100%.

Section 2AA

1. Edina
2. Burnsville
3. Bloomington Jefferson
4. Academy of Holy Angels
5. Chaska/Chanhassen
6. Prior Lake
7. Shakopee
8. Bloomington Kennedy

Note: I completely agree with these seedings. Did you notice that Prior Lake will face Bloomington Jefferson in the first round? Former Jefferson hockey star and now Prior Lake Head Coach Joe Pankratz will get to face his alma mater in the first round of the playoffs in his very first year as a head coach.

Section 3AA

1. Eagan
2. Cretin-Derham Hall
3. Woodbury
4. Apple Valley
5. Hastings
6. Park (Cottage Grove)
7. Eastview
8. Henry Sibley
9. Rosemount

Note: No problems with these seedings.
______________________________________________

Section 4AA

1. Hill-Murray
2. White Bear Lake
3. Stillwater Area
4. Tartan
5. Mounds View
6. North St. Paul
7. Roseville Area
8. St. Paul Como Park
9. St. Paul Saints

Note: No real problems with the seedings here.
______________________________________________

Section 5AA

1. Blaine
2. Centennial
3. Maple Grove
4. Osseo
5. Champlin Park
6. Anoka
7. North Metro
8. Irondale
9. Coon Rapids

Note: I guess Centennial's 1-0-1 record against Blaine and their better record within the Section didn't matter???
______________________________________________

Section 6AA

1. Minnetonka
2. Wayzata
3. Eden Prairie
4. Benilde-St. Margaret's
5. Hopkins
6. Robbinsdale Armstrong
7. Minneapolis East
8. Robbinsdale Cooper
9. Minneapolis West

Note: Wayzata had an argument to be the #1 seed as they had a better record against like opponents in comparison to Minnetonka. Wayzata defeated Edina twice while Minnetonka went 1-1. However, Wayzata did lose to a 6AA opponent Benilde-St. Margaret's. That was most likely the decision maker.

Section 7AA

1. Elk River/Zimmerman
2. Duluth East
3. Andover
4. Forest Lake
5. Grand Rapids
6. St. Francis
7. Cambridge-Isanti
8. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton
9. Princeton/Milaca

Note: I agree 100% with the Section 7AA seedings.
______________________________________________

Section 8AA

1. Moorhead
2. Roseau
3. Brainerd/Pillager/Pierz
4. Bemidji
5. St. Cloud Tech
6. Buffalo
7. Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake
8. River Lakes
9. Becker/Big Lake

Note: I do not understand why Roseau got the number two seed. Roseau lost to both Brainerd and St. Cloud Tech. Brainerd beat Roseau and St. Cloud Tech. Roseau and Moorhead did split two games during the season. Still, Brainerd beat Roseau head-to-head and had a better record against like opponents. Brainerd should have gotten the home game (#2 seed) if/when those two teams meet in the semifinals.

Section 1A

1. Faribault
2. Rochester Lourdes
3. New Prague
4. Albert Lea
5. Red Wing
6. Mankato West
7. Northfield
8. Mankato East/Loyola
9. Austin
10. Waseca
11. St. Peter/LeSueur-Henderson/LeCenter/Montgomery-Lonsdale
12. La Crescent

Note: Interesting. Faribault was beaten by Rochester Lourdes 6-3 and they still get the number one seed. Faribault's two losses were to Lourdes and Albert Lea. Lourdes' losses were to Northfield and Red Wing. Faribault had an overall better record. Still, I think head-to-head games should be given the highest consideration when the record within the Section is similar. It is not a huge deal but still. It would be great to know if the Section committees have a criteria and what that criteria is. After the top two teams, no big issues with the seedings.

Section 2A

1. Breck School
2. Delano/Rockford
3. Blake School
4. Orono
5. Mound-Westonka
6. Providence Academy
7. Holy Family Catholic
8. St. Louis Park
9. Richfield
10. Waconia

Note: This had to be one of the toughest seedings of the 16 Sections to figure out from at least seeds 2 through 6. Blake School played five games within their Section, two against Breck School. Delano/Rockford played nine games within their Section, none against Breck or Blake. They had no like opponents within their own Section. Their only like opponents this season was at the very beginning of the season at the Bob Nelson Tournament. Both teams defeated University School (WI). Blake School defeated Owatonna while Delano/Rockford lost to Owatonna. Should have Blake School received the number 2 seed? Probably. It is not a huge ordeal though since there is not a lot to go on when they do not play like opponents especially within their own Section.

Section 3A

1. Hutchinson
2. Redwood Valley
3. New Ulm
4. Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato
5. Marshall
6. Windom Area
7. Luverne
8. Fairmont
9. Sleepy Eye Area
10. Worthington/Round Lake-Brewster

Note: I had Redwood Valley as the number one seed but I can understand why Hutchinson got it instead. One like opponent: Waconia. Hutchinson defeated Waconia (2-20-2) 8-0 while Redwood Valley tied them 3-3. Hutchinson had one loss within the Section and that was to New Ulm in overtime. Since Redwood Valley did not play New Ulm and Redwood Valley has a bad loss to Windom Area and the tie to like opponent Waconia, I am okay with Hutchinson being the #1 seed even though they are currently 10-12-0.

After watching Redwood Valley completely fall apart in the last two weeks, they are extremely lucky to have a number two seed. If they would have waited until Sunday, I would have thrown them down to the fourth seed to face Marshall.

Section 4A

1. St. Thomas Academy
2. Mahtomedi
3. Totino-Grace
4. Spring Lake Park
5. South St. Paul
6. St. Paul Johnson
7. Chisago Lakes Area
8. Minnehaha Academy
9. East Ridge
10. St. Paul Academy/MPA
11. Simley

Note: No big issues with the seedings here. St. Thomas Academy and Mahtomedi had identical 20-5-0 records, the both beat each other by an indentical score of 6-3. STA probably got the nod for playing a tougher schedule outside of the Section.

Section 5A

1. Hermantown
2. Duluth Denfeld
3. St. Cloud Cathedral
4. Rogers
5. Sauk Rapids-Rice
6. Proctor
7. St. Michael-Albertville
8. North Branch
9. Moose Lake Area
10. Mora/Hinckley-Finlayson
11. Pine City/Rush City
12. Meadow Creek Christian

Note: I am not completely sure why Duluth Denfeld was seeded ahead of St. Cloud Cathedral. St. Cloud Cathedral defeated them head-to-head by a score of 5-1. Denfeld went 2-8-1 in their final 11 games. The only reasoning I can come up with is Cathedral's two losses vs. Denfeld's two wins against like opponents Rogers and Delano/Rockford. Rogers is in Section 5A, Delano/Rockford is Section 2A. Also, Cathedral lost worse to #1 seed Hermantown (8-0) than Denfeld lost to Hermantown (5-4 in OT). Still, with both teams having two losses within the Section, the head-to-head win by Cathedral should have given them the second seed in my opinion.

Section 6A

1. Alexandria
2. Sartell-St. Stephen
3. Fergus Falls
4. Detroit Lakes
5. Willmar
6. Little Falls
7. Northern Lakes
8. St. Cloud Apollo
9. Morris/Benson Area
10. Prairie Centre Area
11. Wadena-Deer Creek

Note: The seedings look about right in this Section. 4th through 7th seed could have been thrown in a hat and decided that way. Detroit Lakes may be seeded a little high as they did lose to Little Falls and went 1-1 against Northern Lakes. Detroit Lakes did beat Willmar, their best 6A win. Willmar defeated Alexandria once before getting defeated by them later. If Northern Lakes would not have lost to Prairie Centre Area, they may have been at least ahead of Little Falls. I do not have a problem though with these seedings.

Section 7A

1. Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl
2. International Falls
3. Hibbing/Chisholm
4. Duluth Marshall
5. Duluth Central
6. Eveleth-Gilbert/Mesabi East
7. Greenway
8. Silver Bay/Cook County
9. Ely/Tower-Soudan/Babbitt-Embarrass
10. Two Harbors

Note: The third and fourth seed could have been switched around in my opinion. Marshall defeated Hibbing/Chisholm head-to-head. Marshall's only loss in the Section was to Virginia/MIB. Hibbing/Chisholm defeated Virginia/MIB last night (Tuesday) 3-2 in overtime but they also lost to Virginia/MIB 5-1 earlier in the year. Marshall arguably played a harder schedule than Hibbing and they did not have a 'second chance' to redeem their loss to Virginia/MIB. If the teams have similar records within the Section, head-to-head should get the strongest consideration.

Section 8A

1. Warroad
2. Thief River Falls
3. East Grand Forks
4. Kittson County Central
5. Lake of the Woods
6. Park Rapids Area
7. Crookston
8. Red Lake Falls
9. Bagley/Fosston
10. Walker-Hackensack-Akeley

Note: I have no problems with the seedings in this Section. It was very close between seeds 4 through 6.
