2011 Upper Midwest High School Elite League | Week 7 Recap

Southeast tops the standings

Team Southeast closed out the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League regular season with a 2-1-0 record during Week 7 action on Oct. 18-23 as it finished atop the league standings with 32 points, four ahead of runner-up Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

Team Southeast’s Jake Guentzel, a Hill-Murray junior, scored three goals and added an assist in a 6-3 triumph over Team Northwest on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Eau Claire, Wis.

Guentzel finished the week with seven points and closed the regular season with 41 points, seven behind regular season scoring champion and Team Southeast linemate Justin Kloos of Lakeville South.

Kloos, a senior who has committed to play at the University of Minnesota, finished with league highs in both goals 17 and assists 30. Kloos’ 47 points was 13 more than the total posted by 2010 scoring champion Tony Cameranesi of Team Northwest.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s and Team North each went unbeaten as Week 7 weekend games were split between Eau Claire and Moorhead.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s beat Team Northwest 6-2, Team Wisconsin 6-3 and Team Southeast 8-2 as it closed the regular season on an 11-game win streak. Shattuck-St. Mary’s finished alone in second place with 28 points despite playing in six fewer games than the rest of the league’s teams.

Senior Teddy Blueger led Shattuck-St. Mary’s in scoring in Week 7 with seven points (two goals, five assists). Goaltender Kyle Hayton led the league with a .929 save percentage and 1.88 goals-against average.

Team North beat Team Northeast 6-5, Team Southwest 4-3 and Great Plains 6-3 in weekend games in Moorhead to close the regular season with an 11-6-4 record and seven-game unbeaten streak. Team North earned sole possession of third place with 26 points.

Travis Underwood of Grand Rapids had three goals and an assist to lead Team North in scoring. Trevor Olson of Duluth East scored twice in the win over Team Northeast and finished the regular season with a team-best 13 goals.

Team Northeast’s Jay Dickman of St. Paul Johnson scored four goals and added an assist to earn Minnesota Wild Player of the Week honors. Dickman scored twice in Team Northeast’s 7-5 win over Team Southwest on Tuesday. He also scored in a 6-5 loss to Team North and 3-3 tie with Great Plains.

Max Coatta of Minnetonka scored twice in Team Southwest’s 5-1 win over Great Plains on Saturday and he finished alone in second place in the Elite League goal-scoring race with 16.

Bismarck’s Alec Rauhauser, Grand Rapids’ Nate Mondry and Fergus Falls’ Jake Ahlgren scored and Dylan Parker of Duluth East made 39 saves as Great Plains forged a 3-3 tie with Team Northeast to close the regular season.

Notes
– The Elite League’s playoffs are scheduled for Oct. 28-30 at New Hope Ice Arena. The championship game will be held Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
– Andover sophomore goaltender Chase Perry was called up from the Minnesota Elite Prep Development League and stopped 27 of 30 shots in an 8-3 victory over Team Wisconsin on Sunday.

New Hope Ice Arena will host the Upper Midwest High School Elite League playoffs beginning Friday night and wrapping up Sunday. Friday's Round 1 match-ups are as follows:

Team Southeast vs Omaha: 5:15 p.m. at New Hope-North
Team Northwest vs. Team Southwest: 7:45 p.m. at New Hope-North
Team North vs. Team Great Plains: 5:45 p.m. at New Hope-South
Team Northeast vs. Team Wisconsin: 8:15 p.m. at New Hope-South

The championship game will be played at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at the New Hope-North arena. The consolation chapionship will be played at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at the New Hope-South arena.
