Upper Midwest High School Elite League: Connor Hurley rules Week 2


Edina junior Connor Hurley had five points to earn a share of the league scoring league as Team Southwest went 3-0 for the second straight week and remained the only unbeaten, untied team in the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League after two weeks of play.

All Week 2 games were played at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine as part of the North American Hockey League Showcase.

Jono Lindquist of Bloomington Jefferson scored the winning goal with less than 5 minutes remaining as Team Southwest (6-0-0) won its second game on Saturday with 6-5 triumph over Team North. Team Southwest had defeated Great Plains 6-1 Saturday morning as Hurley scored twice and Edina’s Dylan Malmquist added three assists.

Team Southwest concluded the weekend on Sunday with a 6-3 win over Team Southeast. Holy Family Catholic sophomore Shane Gersich scored twice for Team Southwest.

Team Northwest also remained unbeaten at 5-0-1 after outscoring its three Week 2 opponents by a combined 20-5.

Team Northwest’s Andrew Zerban of Elk River scored three goals in an 8-1 win over Great Plains on Saturday. Spencer Naas of Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Matt Colford of Breck each scored twice for Team Northwest in Sunday’s 6-0 triumph over Team Wisconsin.

Team Northwest goaltender Chase Perry, a junior from Andover, allowed just one goal in 11Ž2 games over the weekend. He leads the Elite League with a .955 save percentage and 2.58 goals-against average.

NOTES: Hurley and Team Northeast’s T.J. Moore, a senior from Benilde-St. Margaret’s, share the league scoring lead with 12 points. Moore and Colford are the goal-scoring leaders with six each. … Week 3 begins on Sept. 18 at New Hope Ice Arena with the first Tuesday night game of the season, a 7 p.m. matchup between Team Southeast and Team Southwest. The rest of the Week 3 schedule will be split with Saturday and Sunday games in Stevens Point and at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth.
