Rams stay perfect with OT win

by Virg Foss

For the second time in three weeks, Scott Oliver's son came through in the Nick of time.

Junior Nick Oliver's 6-on-4 power-play goal with 24.7 seconds left in regulation tied the game and senior Ben Nelson's backhander at 2:49 of overtime won it as the Roseau Rams edged Grand Forks Red River 2-1 on Tuesday night in a battle of two unbeaten high school hockey teams from neighboring states.

Roseau (14-0), the defending Minnesota Class AA state champion, and defending North Dakota champion Red River (12-1-1) put on a display of speed, skill, great goaltending and breath-taking transition games to keep a huge crowd at Fido Purpur Arena on the edge of the seats.

Oliver, who scored with less than a second left in regulation play in Roseau's victory over Bloomington Jefferson in the title game of the Herald Jason Stadstad Holiday Classic on Dec. 22, didn't wait long this time for his dramatic goal, his 11th of the season.

When Red River's Russel Crary was whistled on a controversial holding penalty with 53.1 seconds left in regulation, Roseau pulled goalie Mike Lee for a sixth attacker to set up Oliver for a scramble in front for the tying goal.

Then Nelson, Roseau's second-leading scorer, netted his 11th goal of the season in overtime to deflate the Roughriders, who had the better of the chances, especially in the first period.

Minnetonka boys' hockey: Learning all along the way

by Brian Stensaas

The Minnetonka boys' hockey team has been strong this season, but no amount of success keeps the game from teaching a lesson or two as the season winds its way toward playoffs.

Call it learning experience No. 2.

About 40 hours before Minnetonka's boys' hockey team faced off against Hopkins in the Skippers' Classic Lake Conference opener, first-year head coach Brian Urick broke down the other four teams in the league.

Dean Spiros: Hopkins shows its strong start on ice is no fluke

by Dean Spiros

Behind an impressive effort in by Alex Fons, the Royals beat Minnetonka, improving to 13-0 this season

The Energizer Blonde arrived fashionably late at the rink and fashionably dressed with her royal blue scarf and gray Hopkins sweatshirt. Working her way from one end of the bleachers to the other she wrinkled her nose and asked no one in particular a question: "What are all these people doing here?"

Indeed, it has been a while since a boys' hockey game at the Hopkins Pavilion was the place to be on a Saturday night. There weren't enough seats to handle all the curious who showed up, and surely some of the hometown faithful stood elbow-to-elbow with the skeptics on hand to see the Royals' bubble burst after their 12-0 start.

For the most part it had been deemed naïve to mention Hopkins in the same breath as the likes of Edina, Hill-Murray or Benilde-St. Margaret's, 2007-08 powerhouses all. Proof was expected to be presented on Saturday with 11-1 Minnetonka coming to town for a skate, the first true test this season for the Royals.

That roar you heard was the Hopkins fans saluting the Royals after a stirring 4-3 victory in the Classic Lake Conference opener for both teams. The silence was deafening, too.

Even Hopkins coach Chad Nyberg had been among the skeptics before the game, admitting the Royals were no match for Minnetonka in the skill department. But on this night the sum of their parts was enough to beat a team that is on the short list of state title contenders.

Eagles rally for victory over Blaze

By Dean Spiros

Is the Eden Prairie boys hockey team tired on playing on the road after seven consecutive games away from home? Absolutely. Almost as much as losing games in overtime.

The Eagles did something about it on Saturday, rallying for a pair of goals in the third period to edge Burnsville 3-2.

Sophomore Mike Erickson tied the game at 2-2 only 28 seconds after Burnsville's Lane Gustavson had given the Blaze the lead. Senior Dave Meyer scored the game-winner 59 second later for the Eagles, who play their first 10 games of the season on the road as their arena gets refurbished.

It was a gutty victory for a team that had suffered overtime losses to Lake Conference opponents Eastview and Lakeville North within the previous eight days.

Edina boys not afraid to take on all comers

In another era it was known as "barnstorming," with a talented team traveling the land with an open invitation to those interested in lining up against them for a little friendly competition.

The Edina boys hockey team, the top-ranked team in the Metro, lives up to the tag of talented team. As for the Hornets' willingness to take on all comers, it's simply the best way coach Curt Giles knows of bringing the best out of his players.

Rebels experienced all over the ice

The Champlin Park boys hockey team took a little ride last Saturday in search of one final tune-up before opening the season this week with games against Rochester John Marshall and North St. Paul.

OK, so it was more than a little ride - the Rebels bussed to and from Grand Rapids Saturday, covering more than 400 miles.
