Spartans on a roll
Rochester Mayo is getting healthy and it's showing in the Spartans' play.
Mayo welcomed back two of its four injured players on Tuesday -- junior goalie Jordan Yaggy and junior forward Alex Whitney -- and both played key roles in a 4-1 victory over Big Nine Conference co-leader Albert Lea at Graham Arena 1.
Yaggy, who was feared to have injured his ACL at Owatonna last week, returned to the net and stopped 25 shots. Whitney, the Spartans' third-leading scorer, returned to the lineup and assisted on a third-period insurance goal.
More importantly, Mayo picked up its second consecutive victory over one of the Big Nine's best teams. It won 7-3 at third-place Owatonna last Thursday. The Spartans knocked Albert Lea out of a tie for first place with Mankato West, which won on Tuesday.
