Spartans hold off Falcons
An injury-depleted Rochester Mayo team stormed to an early lead then held off the hard-charging Faribault Falcons for a 5-4 Big Nine Conference victory at Graham Arena 1 on Thursday.
The Spartans were missing four key players, including two on defense, but they blitzed Faribault for four first-period goals and led 4-0 after one.
Charlie Thauwald, Tony Schultz, Garrett Powers and Drew Block each scored in the opening period.
Tom Alexander scored Mayo's final goal, which turned out to be the game-winner, just 1:14 into the third period.
It was the only meeting of the season between Mayo and Faribault, which means the Spartans earned four points in the Big Nine standings, moving them into a tie for third place with Owatonna.
